it was such a pleasure getting the ferry from rosslare to cherbourg. first of all the ferry terminal in rosslare is brilliant. the coffee dock cafe was so good and the food they served was so reasonably priced and absolutely delicious. toasted sandwiches and egg salad. two dinners it was so good. lovely calm ferry terminal and very friendly helpful staff. then the crossing was remarkably smooth and we got into cherbour two hours early! bonus! i loved it.

  • "Lovely ferry crossing from France to Ireland"

The 15 hour trip was made more enjoyable by the staff and the amenities on board. I booked the reclining chair initially, but couldn't take the extreme vibrations and noise. I ended up upgrading to a cabin (relatively affordable, but only if available). Meals were included in my ticket, and were reasonably good. The organisation on the Cherbourg side was not th greatest, as it was a lot of waiting, driving to the next point, waiting some more, driving to the next point, waiting some more.

  • "Extraordinary Customer Service!"

I cannot say enough good things about the entire staff aboard the Stena line ferry between France and Ireland. They went far above and beyond the norm, when my cat escaped my car and the boat crew spent hours searching for, successfully!  Thank you, Stena Line!

The French city and port of Cherbourg is located on the Cotentin Peninsular in the north west of France. Invaded by the Vikings in the 9th century who were instrumental in developing Cherbourg into a port, the city has a long history. In Napoleonic times the harbour was fortified in order to prevent a British naval assault on it. Underwater obstructions were sunk at intervals across the harbour entrance which were eventually replaced with piles of masonry rubble. The works began in 1784 and were not concluded until 1850, long after Napoleon's defeat at the Battle of Waterloo.

There are many things to see and do in Cherbourg including the Cite de la Mer (the city of the sea) which is a museum dedicated to maritime history. The museum was opened in 2002 and is housed in the cruise terminal at Cherbourg port. Visitors to the city may also choose to take a leisurely stroll in the Jardin de la Roche Fauconniere which is a private botanical garden located in the Parc de la Fauconniere. Established in the 1870's the gardens contain roughly 3,400 specimens, many of which come from the Southern Hemisphere.
