Popular attractions on the island include the Chios Byzantine Museum, the Archaeological Museum of Chios, its medieval villages and the 11th century monastery of Nea Moni which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The island is mainly mountainous although there are a few valleys to be found in the south and east parts of the island. The island has a typical Mediterranean climate with mild winters and warm, dry, summers and is known for its picturesque landscape.
