About Sylt Island

Sylt is a small, slender island in northern Germany, part of the North Frisian Islands in the North Sea. Defined by forty kilometres of sandy beaches along its western shoreline, and top-of-the-range spa resorts on the Wadden Sea to the east, Germany’s fourth largest island is a popular, peaceful retreat. It’s been put on the international map, however, for its credentials as a world class windsurfing destination, hosting the coveted world cup each year. On land, over half the island is protected by nature reserves or conservation zones, resulting in idyllic swathes of countryside, offering plenty of opportunities for lovely walks. Michelin star restaurants and vibrant bars await night time revellers, too, so there’s something for everyone. Ferries regularly make the international, albeit short, crossing from the Danish island of Romo, just to the north, every day. The sailings usually last just over half an hour, arriving in List on Sylt’s north-eastern tip.
