Hanstholm Port is a former island, which now belongs to Denmark and rests on the north coast bordering Vigso Bay. Unsurprisingly due to its location, most activities in and around Hanstholm are centred around the city’s maritime heritage; the fisheries industry becoming increasingly prevalent in recent years. The port was formerly a key part of Scandinavia’s connections to the North Atlantic, though now its primary use is for ferry routes in closer proximity, such as moving as much freight traffic from land to sea as possible. The ferry routes departing from Hanstholm Port are all crossing to relatively nearby ports, with sailings to Lerwick, Shetland, Torshaven and the Faroe Islands all running fairly regularly. Northlink Ferries and Smyril Ferries provide their vessels for the crossing; the vast majority of the ferries will offer eateries and bars for the passengers to enjoy. The harbour is well connected with the rest of the city; a bus line runs specifically to connect passengers from the ferry terminals to the city centre. Many visitors intend on just passing through the fishing town, yet end up staying for a few days to sample the local shopping centre and fishing auctions.
