Harbour Island Guide

Harbour Island Ferry Port

The strip of Harbour Island, found in the outer reaches of the Bahamas archipelago, is a slice of paradise famed for the stunning pink-sand beaches that sweep across its eastern coast. Though the peculiar coastline steals most of the international plaudits, it is hard to ignore the luxurious swathe of tropical woodland that covers the island or the colourful collection of colonial-style houses that make up the Dunmore Town neighbourhood. Unsurprisingly, the island is a celebrated tourist destination and plenty of hotels and resorts can be found along the flower-lined streets by the coast. They have capitalised on the region’s draw as an idyllic holiday haven blessed with perpetual warmth and an effortless tranquillity. The port of Harbour Island is found on the western edge of Dunmore Town, where the seafront overlooks a sheltered pocket of the Atlantic Ocean ringed by a thread of small landmasses and the larger island of North Eleuthera. The ferry terminal sits at the end of a pier known locally as Government Dock. It is a popular spot from which to witness the evening sun sink towards the distant horizon, with tourists and locals alike gathering to watch the spectacle while sipping on cocktails. Though there is no system of public transportation on the isle, due to the port’s location near the centre of Dunmore Town – the island’s only settlement – it is easy to find. The island is little more than 3 miles from tip to tip meaning that most places can be reached on foot, though rented golf buggies are a common form of transport. Only one ferry route currently runs from the port. A Bahamas Ferries line sails to the Bahaman capital city of Nassau a few times throughout the week. It’s a short journey that arcs around the beautiful northern tip of Eleuthera before zipping south-west to the populous island of New Providence.
