Kalamata is the second most populous city of Peloponnese peninsula in southern Greece. Situated at the apex of Messinian Bay and the foot of Mount Taygetos, Kalamata is an ideal location for exploring the secrets of Messinia.
Apart from the indented shores, sandy beaches, forested mountains and fertile valleys, the natural beauty of Kalamata coexists with significant historical and cultural sights: the legendary Villehardouin castle on a pine-covered hill overlooking the sea; the exquisite Old City at the foot of the castle; and the Church of the Ypapandi which suffered great damage during the 1985 earthquake. Wandering in the alleys of Kalamata’s historical centre will revive images from the past and reveal buildings that have resisted time.
The coastal area of Kalamata bustles with life during summer, with the long coastline filled with people sunbathing during the day, and with young people filling up the clubs at night. The port of Kalamata was once a significant port that connected all the Mediterranean centres, and was the centre of the town’s commercial and industrial development.

Kythira is also famous within Greece for its thyme honey as well as some small-scale cultivation of vegetables and fruit.
