Found in the state of South Carolina, Little River is the oldest town in Horry County, dating back to the early 18th century. The only ferry route from the port is to Westview, with each crossing taking around 90 minutes and departing around five times per day. Renowned for its simplistic nature, Little River is one of the most unique towns in the USA. The town has gained relative fame, especially in the gambling industry, after a gambling boat was docked at the pier, giving tourists the chance to place some bets over international waters where the gambling laws are more lenient. Aside from gambling, the restaurants are famed for the delicious fresh seafood on offer; some tourists flock to Little River just to experience the sumptuous cuisine. After enjoying the food, the more adventurous can try their hand at jet-skiing which is available at the waterfront, or if it’s the right time of year, head down to the annual blue crab festival for a refreshing change of pace. The small land area makes the town easy to get around, most of it can be covered by foot and can be done so in less than a day. For a quicker and more convenient way to get around, taxis are readily available and are generally fairly affordable.

Long, challenging walking trails decorate the mountains and gloriously green parks dominate the landscape – there aren’t many places as picturesque as Powell River. Copeland Islands Marine Provincial Park affords wonderful views of the surrounding hillside and rock formations, as well as offering a refreshing dip in the crisp water when the weather is agreeable. Inland Lake Provincial Park supplies an idyllic trail alongside the edge of the greenery and foliage, showcasing the most aesthetically pleasing spots along the Sunshine Coast. Whilst the parks and walking trails exude a relaxing vibe, there are ample opportunities to try your hand at the adventurous watersports on offer. Kayaking, canoeing and snorkelling are hugely popular amongst locals and tourists alike, with many heading to the city purely to experience the array of activities along the coastline. The shores and hiking trails are the standout attractions in Powell River, though there is something for those who prefer to spend their time exploring the historical culture belonging to the city. Museums, movie theatres and specialty shops line the centre, providing enough entertainment to fill the itinerary of the most enthusiastic traveller.
Powell River is only accessible for cars via the ferry, so if you’re hoping to embark on an adventure along the coast in your vehicle, booking a ferry is the only viable option. Taxis and water taxis are available for quick and convenient transport, and a reliable train service runs through much of British Columbia.
