Portimao Guide

Portimao Ferry Port

Found on the southwest coast of Portugal, Portimao is a municipality in the Algarve district that has become popular with tourists. The port is used to connect passengers with the Madeira Islands that lay to the west of the Portuguese mainland.

What is there to do in Portimao?

Many small port towns can be repressed by their status as a transport hub, yet Portimao is a pleasant surprise for many who visit. The waterfront is an idyll decorated with historic buildings, copious shopping outlets and numerous restaurants, creating a friendly, welcoming atmosphere that entices many visitors into staying for an extra day or two. The promenade is perhaps the highlight of the town; the assortment of colours next to the foliage and plant life transmits a natural energy. Along from the harbour, the shoreline is home to some wonderful beaches and pool clubs, ideal for whiling a few hours under the glorious sunshine. Unlike neighbouring towns, Portimao isn’t overwhelmed with attractions or landmarks, yet the relative simplicity and emptiness has contributed to a relaxed atmosphere that flows through the charming, quiet streets. Whilst browsing the shops for an authentic item at a bargain price, there won’t be a mad rush from other shoppers – the streets remain fairly sparse all year round. Many choose to let loose after a day perusing the isles by enjoying some of the sumptuous seafood served at the fine quality restaurants.

How do you get around Portimao?

The town is very small so it is more than possible to cover much of it by foot, especially the coastline which offers desirable walking trails.
